Once upon a time DIY work was considered men's work, but the results of a New Zealand based survey suggest this is changing.

The New Zealand National DIY Report was commissioned by global giant 3M and asked 1,007 of our neighbours across the ditch about their DIY habits.

Similarly to Aussies, many said they preferred to do the work themselves rather than hire a professional. Results also show just under half (48 per cent) of these projects are being completed by the woman of the house.

No matter what sex you identify with, if you feel the need to flex that DIY muscle, here are a few great DIY projects you could tackle in your home.

    DIY painting

Whether it's providing one room with a splash of paint by means of a feature wall, or painting everything from head-to-toe, changing the hue of your walls or ceiling will help create a refreshed and invigorated look.

Just be sure not to miss any corners or spill any paint on the carpet to ensure your other half is as happy with the job as you are.

    DIY Gardening

There are plenty of jobs that can be done outside in order to freshen up the space, whether it be building a planter box, creating a vege garden or building a tree hut.

You could even put in some pavers on your own and create the perfect barbecue area!

Renovating this space may encourage you to head outside more as you can enjoy the fruits of your labour once complete.

    Bathroom DIY

Jobs completed in the bathroom need not be too difficult - you could paint the bath, install a new cabinet or create a gorgeous tiled area to add character to this space.

Alternatively, see if you could create some pizzazz to your bathroom by adding some unusual storage suggestions. This will make your bathroom stand out - you could even build some shelves.
