Late spring and summer is the perfect time to plant tomatoes in most parts of the country, but with so many varieties on the market it can be hard to know which ones to choose.
If you're thinking about taking on a garden DIY job anytime soon, it's important to know the difference between different tomato plants so you can make an informed decision when it comes to selecting the right ones for your backyard.
Cherry
Cherry tomatoes are one of the most popular varieties, renowned for their high intensity, sweet flavour. These are perfect for eating by themselves or fresh in salads and pastas.
Roma
Also known as egg tomatoes, this variety is more suited to cooking with than eating fresh. Roma tomatoes are easy to grow and prefer warmer climates. They also have fewer seeds than other types and a sweet fleshy pulp.
Grape
The grape tomato is the smallest variety – about half the size of a cherry tomato. They are easy to grow and are jam packed full of flavour. The whole family will enjoy these straight out of the garden, even the kids!
Oxheart
Oxheart tomatoes are more suited to cooler climates and are a larger variety than grape and cherry. They are more susceptible to pests and disease so it is important to use sprays and fertiliser when growing these tomatoes.
